The Athenian Champions LGBTQI+ Inclusivity 🌈

In an industry often marked by intense competition and long hours, a new study by Deliveroo reveals a pressing need for greater inclusivity within the hospitality sector, particularly for LGBTQI+ individuals. Our founder, Tim Vasilakis, is at the forefront of this change through his involvement with Deliveroo’s Open Kitchen initiative—a program designed to connect aspiring LGBTQI+ chefs with established talent in the community. Tim, who identifies as queer, is a dedicated mentor for The Open Kitchen, passionately advocating for the coexistence of authenticity and success. He emphasises the crucial role of visible, positive role models in conveying that dreams are attainable and that LGBTQI+ individuals belong in the industry.

“It’s about breaking down barriers and creating a landscape where LGBTQI+ people feel seen, heard, and safe,” he asserts.

The Open Kitchen is a heartfelt initiative split into two transformative parts. In the first part, Tim Vasilakis conducts a Masterclass, where he pours his passion and expertise into training five LGBTQI+ aspiring chefs on how to craft exquisite Greek cuisine. The second part is the evening service, where The Athenian comes alive, preparing four of our signature dishes. This service is not just about food; it’s a celebration of community and support, as all the revenue generated is donated to The Open Kitchen Fund. This fund is dedicated to offering professional training to LGBTQI+ chefs, nurturing their talent and dreams.

Tim underscores the importance of this initiative, stating:

“We must not become complacent; we need to keep pushing forward… The fight for equality is ongoing, and it demands our unwavering commitment.”

With initiatives like The Open Kitchen, Tim Vasilakis and Deliveroo are paving the way for a future where every chef, regardless of their identity, can thrive authentically and visibly in their chosen career.

The Open Kitchen initiative is a beacon of hope and progress, and we’re proud to be a part of it, and donating to The Open Kitchen Fund.

This fund is more than just financial support—it’s a lifeline, providing essential training and opportunities for LGBTQI+ chefs to shine. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive culinary community.
